Trailer Watch: Ralph Fiennes does Shakespeare, Lucas’ latest, and more

Can I just say that it’s sort of weird to see Ralph Fiennes with a nose?

Fiennes has grown back his missing scent organ for his upcoming adaptation of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, which will also be his first film in the director’s chair. A modern retelling, it also stars Gerard Butler who looks pretty damn excited to be able to yell and shake weapons again, his main marketable talent.

I remain on the fence, but overall, it looks like we might be able to add another fairly decent modern retelling of Shakespeare to the list. The actors don’t seem to have any difficulty delivering antiquated speech while walking around with AK-47s or hanging out in a modern senatorial setting.

Caius Martius ‘Coriolanus’ (Ralph Fiennes), a revered and feared Roman General is at odds with the city of Rome and his fellow citizens. Pushed by his controlling and ambitious mother Volumnia (Vanessa Redgrave) to seek the exalted and powerful position of Consul, he is loath to ingratiate himself with the masses whose votes he needs in order to secure the office. When the public refuses to support him, Coriolanus’s anger prompts a riot that culminates in his expulsion from Rome. The banished hero then allies himself with his sworn enemy Tullus Aufidius (Gerard Butler) to take his revenge on the city.

William Shakespeare’s Coriolanus opens on November 10, 2011 and is directed by and starring Ralph Fiennes, with Gerard Butler, Vanessa Redgrave and a lot of other actors who will now be able to say they’re Shakespearean actors.

George Lucas has been working on his World War II fighter pilot drama Red Tails for a long time, and we’re finally getting a look at it. Directed by Anthony Hemingway (Treme) and produced by Lucas, the film tells the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, a group of segregated African-American pilots who rose above their crap treatment and made heroes of themselves during the Second World War. While we’re looking at some wooden acting which hopefully isn’t the standard here, the action looks absolutely phenomenal.

Red Tails hits theaters on January 20, 2012 and stars Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard and others.

Chris Evans was very impressive this last year, with great turns in Scott Pilgrim vs The World and Captain America: The First Avenger. His next film, however, is something completely different, with him starring in Puncture as a drug-addicted lawyer who takes on the Pharmaceutical industry.

The film looks fairly decent, though a bit melodramatic (I count at least two running-down-the-hallway-with-papers scenes in that trailer), and the fact that up to this point one of the highest level credits on director Adam Kassen’s resume is Wife Swap isn’t exactly reassuring.

In Puncture, tattooed and drug-addicted townie Mike Weiss (Chris Evans) has more than his share of personal demons, but can he straighten up long enough to lead a renegade safety-needle inventor to victory against a monopolizing medical supply corporation? This David-and-Goliath legal drama, based on a true story, exposes the corruption and kickback schemes threatening the lives of millions of health care workers.

Puncture is directed by Adam Kassen (Wife Swap, The Minor Accomplisments of Jackie Woodman [slightly better, right?]) and stars Chris Evans.

Dear Daniel Radcliffe,
With this trailer, I think you’ve successfully distanced yourself from Harry Potter. It looks damn creepy and like it might be a good time. And I’m not just saying that because this was the last trailer I watched tonight and I’m alone in my house.

Seriously:
1. Creepy dolls. Check.
2. Creepy little girls. Check.
3. Creepy rhyme. Check.
4. Well choreographed jump moments. Check.
5. Things catching on fire. Check.

The Woman in Black directed by James Watkins (Eden Lake, writer, The Descent part 2) opens on February 10, 2012 and stars Daniel Radcliffe.
